The Crusaders passed their first major test of the young season this past weekend at the Lion’s Den tournament hosted by Leo Hayes High School in Fredericton. KVHS finished the weekend 3-2 and for the second straight season with our two loses coming at the hands of Auburn Drive from Dartmouth Nova Scotia. Once in the round robin and again in the championship game. Our three wins came against Carleton North (80-59), Horton High School from Wolfville, NS (75-67) and Prince Andrew High School from Dartmouth, NS (88-76).
It was great to get some quality wins against some top caliber teams but the best part of the weekend was seeing a championship culture starting to emerge. Things that were consistent from game-to-game were:
- Players on the floor or on the bench supporting each other , giving energy to the group
- Toughness…first to the floor for loose balls, taking charges, setting screens, running the floor, etc.
- Players improving
This was just beginning of a very busy five week stretch but if the opening weekend is any indication, this is going to be a fun team to watch and it looks like we’re well positioned to make another deep post season run.
The KVHS Varsity boys basketball team opened their 2013-2014 season with a dominate 93-35 win over Harbour View Vikings this past Tuesday evening. After a slow start the Crusader grabbed a 43-15 lead at half time and never looked back.
Leading the way for KV was…
- Brad Sanford with 20 pts, 10 rebounds and 6 steals
- Ben Tait with 16 points and 6 steals
- Ian Crowley with 14 pts and 13 rebounds
- Alex Loughery with 10 pts and 10 rebounds
The Crusaders’ are in action this weekend as they participate in the Lions Den Tournament hosted by Leo Hayes High School.
I have decided to move tomorrow’s practice to 7:00 am to avoid a few conflicts. Sorry for the late notice.
This is a serious looking group. Game faces are already on and the first game is still five days away. Let the games begin!
One thing I forgot to mention at tonight’s parent’s meeting was game video. Last year I attempted to record as many games as possible. I like to use the video as a teaching tool throughout the season plus I’m always being approached by university coaches for game film on players being recruited. Last year my son and daughter recorded a majority of the games but they probably won’t be available as much this season.
I will bring my camera and tri-pod to all games but I will probably need someone to help work the camera. If there is anyone interested in helping it would be greatly appreciated.
When I got home following our meeting the Charles P. Allen Tournament schedule was sitting in my Inbox. I’ve uploaded it to the team web site. The good news is we don’t play until 6:00 pm on Friday and the tournament is just Fri-Sat.
The web site now contains the schedules for the following tournaments:
- Lions Den (Nov 15-17 / Fri-Sun)
- CEC Tip-off (Nov 22-23 / Fri-Sat)
- CP Allen (Nov 29-30 / Fri-Sat)
- Rick Cotter Classic (Dec 13-15 / Fri-Sun)
I’ve also added all the round-robin games for those tournament to the team calendar.
I would like to have a parent’s meeting to talk about the season ahead and the Riverboat Tournament in January. I’m hoping Tuesday (Nov 5) at 7:00 pm following our practice works for most. I will try to keep the meeting as short as possible. If at least one family member for each player could be there it would be greatly appreciated. The meeting will be in the school library since Cadets have the classroom off the cafeteria on Tuesdays. See you then.
Since the boys were unable to distribute any flyers today due to the weather, we’ll start a little later tomorrow (9:30 am) to avoid knocking on doors too early. Here is the agenda for tomorrow…
9:00 am – Truck arrives at KVHS (Sandra to meet driver)
9:30 am – 12:00 pm – Bottle drive
12:00 pm – Hot Chocolate and Muffins in Mrs Tait’s classroom 241
12:30 – 1:30 pm Team building session with Patrick O’Neil
8:00 pm – Sleepover at Ethan O’Neil’s house
Sunday AM- Senior Breakfast with Chief Richard
We ask that each player bring $10 for the sleep over to cover the food (I hear there was extensive planning involved). And don’t forget to bring some extra garbage bags as well.
The 2013-2014 season is finally here!
We officially kick things off tonight today with tryouts running from 6:30 to 8:30 pm. If the level of play at open gyms this fall is any indication, selecting this year’s teams will be a tough challenged for the coaches. The upside is that KVHS does not look to be entering a “rebuilding” phase after back-to-back trips to the Final 12 Championships at Harbour Station. This year’s version of the Blue & White is once again looking like championship contenders.
Let’s Go Crusaders.
The 2012-2013 Sr. boys team kicks off their season tonight as they visit St. Malachy’s Saints for a 7:15pm tip-off. Tonight’s game is also the opening game in the NBIAA Southern Conference schedule. KVHS won the Southern Conference last season finishing a perfect 12-0 record.
