Yesterday BNB announced the coaches for their Under 17 and Under 15 program and Bill Mayberry, coach of the KVHS varsity girl’s team has been named head coach of the Under 17 girls teams. Bill will be assisted by Lori Wall also a coach from the Kennebecasis Valley who has been coaching at both Rothesay High and Harry Miller Middle School (BNB Press Release).
Bill and Lori will begin a two year commitment that will see them take the U17 team this summer and New Brunswick Summer Games team next summer. Given the success of the Rothesay High and Kennebecasis Valley High school program I’d say the BNB U17 program is in good hands and I’m sure the BNB girl’s teams will have many KV area players on the roster.
Today, UNB annouced they have hired Brent Baker as their new men’s basketball coach (Press Release). Time will tell if Brent can turn around a program that struggled on and off the court this season going 2-18 in the AUS this past season. In my opinion job number one will be to change the perception young high school players have of UNB. Not many of today’s players who live outside of Fredericton aspire to play for UNB. In recent years Jeff Speedy has done a good job of changing that perception for female players in NB, hopefully Brent will do the same for the men.
