KVHS has a new rebounding King and like most royal families, the new King is a lot like the old King.

This past weekend at the Rick Cotter Classic, Colin Loughery surpassed his brother Alex to become the all-time leading rebounder for KVHS Varsity boys basketball. Colin currently sits at 795 rebounds. Alex had 779 in his three years playing varsity basketball. With 13 games remaining in the regular season, and hopefully a few postseason games, Colin has an outside chance to achieve a very unique feat; 1000 points and 1000 rebounds.

The Crusaders only have rebound stats from the 2012-2013 season onward, but Colin’s rebounding numbers stack up against anyone who has ever played for the Blue and White.

Alumni that would be in that discussion are…

  • Jeff Scoville (Class of 1977)
  • Greg Thorne (Class of 1981)
  • Brian Elliot (Class of 1988)
  • Tim Johnston (Class of 1989)
  • Joe Walker (Class of 1990)
  • Graham Taylor (1995)
  • Andrew Munro (Class of 1999)
  • Drew Stratton (Class of 2003)
  • Jamie Barefoot (Class of 2006)
  • Ryan Kingston (Class of 2007)
  • Brent Kingston (Class of 2008)
  • Simon Gagnon (Class 2010)
  • Adam Spurrell (Class of 2011)

All those listed about,  and others, would have incredible rebounding stats, especially in their senior years, but it is hard to imagine them having a career average of over 10 rebounds per game as most of them played on great teams alongside other great rebounders.

Over the past three seasons, Colon has averaged 10.32 rebounds per game. That is also the best all-time for the Crusaders. Erik Nissen (Class of 2013) who was an AUS All-Star while playing for Acadia and is currently playing professional basketball in Spain, has the second-best career rebounding average at 10.28 rebounds per game. But Erik’s numbers only include his senior season. And Erik’s is 6’9″!

Colin has averaged double-digit rebounds each of his three years playing varsity and has multiple 20 rebounds games during that time. To say Colin has a passion for rebounding is an understatement. Colin believes every missed shot is his. His rebounding style is like the old school greats from the past. Besides his brother Alex, who had the same tuff-as-nails approach, Moses Malone is probably the best example. Put a body on someone…then go it!

Colin’s assault on the KVHS record books isn’t done, however, and it isn’t limited to just defense and rebound. He currently is just 160 points away from 1000 and needs four more assists to pass his brother (and Brad Sanford) to move into third on the all-time assists leaderboard (also a stat only available from 2012-2013 season onward).

But it’s all in a days work for this ultimate grinder. A guy willing to put in the work and to give 100%, 100% of the time. Probably why he was voted captain three straight years!

Congratulations, Colin. Now get back to work.
