Earlier this evening the KVHS Crusaders defeated the Saint John Greyhounds in Southern Conference varsity boys action 61-46 to improve to 1-1 in league play.

The Crusaders were led by junior point guard Ryan Pollard with 22 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals. Eight other players scored for the home team including Gavin Trites with 11 and Dallen MacDougall with 10.

The Greyhounds had nine players record at least two points but only Ethan Alward had double figures with 12. Brody Dempster and Cody Carr added 7 each.

Summary

The Crusaders started the game with lots of energy and were able to create several turnovers, however they were unable to convert those turnovers into points, allowing the Greyhounds to hang around. As the opening quarter closed Ethan Alward was able to track down a long offensive rebound to bank home a contested mid-range jumper to pull the visitor within four points, 18-14.

The 2nd quarter was a low scoring affair with both teams struggling to find a rhythm on offense. The Crusaders, however, were able to hold the Greyhound to just seven points on three made field goals, outscoring them 11 to 7 and a half time lead of 31-21.

The Crusaders started the third quarter much like they did the 1st but this time they were able to convert, forcing Saint John High to call some early timeouts. Over the opening six minutes of the 3rd quarter the Crusaders held the ‘Hounds to just two points increasing their lead to 20. Despite the cold start, the visitors refused to go away ending the quarter on a 8-4 run to cut the Crusaders lead to 47-31 after 30 minutes.

The 4th quarter was an evenly played game with the ‘Hounds outscoring the Crusaders 15-14.
