Men’s Final
The Rothesay Netherwood RiverHawk men’s team avenged their only lost of the weekend in convincing fashion by defeating the Fredericton High School 107-84.
The opening half of the championship game was much like their first meeting of the weekend which ended with FHS hitting a 3 pointer in the final seconds to secure the win. Both teams came out looking to push the ball hard in transition while deploying a mix of man-to-man defense and trapping zones defenses. The 1st quarter belonged to the Black Kats you jumped out to an early led, however, it was the bench for RNS that stepped up late in the 2nd quarter with back-to-back three pointers to end the half to take a 2 point lead, 47-45 at the half.
In the 3rd quarter the Riverhawks came out of the locker room with a much greater focus especially on defense. Lead by sophomore point guard Kellen Tynes they blew the game open by forcing the Black Kats into uncharacteristic turnovers which lead to easy transition baskets. Riverhawk senior guard Lyon McLean also put on a shooting display hitting NBA-range 3 pointers, and several well contested 2’s, scoring 18 points in the half. RNS led by nearly 30 points mid-way through the 4th quarter before finishing the game 107-84.
The Riverhawks defeated KVHS 81-45 then lost to FHS 97-94 in pool play. They then defeat Saint John High 97-83 in the semi-finals to reach the championship game. The Black Kats defeated KVHS 84-60 and RNS 97-94 in pool play then got by Horton 91-70 in a very physical semi-final game.
